Labour Market Conditions

Environmental Officer

Labour market conditions for Canada are unavailable.

The employment outlook in Ontario will be moderate from 2023-2025, with employment growth leading to a moderate number of new positions and a moderate number of positions from retirements. There are a moderate number of unemployed workers with recent experience in this occupation. A trend allowing for employment growth includes ongoing concerns and regulations related to food, environmental, and workplace safety.

Mandatory inspections at restaurants, hotels, schools, hospitals, and other public facilities or institutions to maintain enhanced public health standards will also allow for growth. Employment can be found in all major industry categories, but most are found in public administration, mainly federal and provincial government departments, plus health care service providers, mostly out-patient care centres.

Fish and Wildlife Technician

Labour demand and labour supply are expected to be broadly in line for this occupation group over the 2022-2031 period at the national level.

Ontario鈥檚 employment outlook will be moderate through 2025, with employment growth leading to several new positions. Not many positions will become available due to retirements. Employment growth can be expected due to public and private sector investments in life sciences and research, including the strengthening of the biomanufacturing sector.

Favourable job opportunities are also expected to support the province鈥檚 large food processing cluster. While this group can be employed in a variety of sectors, the majority find employment in professional, scientific and technical services, federal government departments, manufacturing, mostly pharmaceutical production, and farms.

Forestry Technician

The employment outlook for Ontario through 2025 will be moderate, with employment expected to remain relatively stable. Not many positions will become available due to retirements. Employment growth can be attributed to an increasing focus on growing and adopting sustainable forest management practices, addressing climate change and expanding urban forestry, plus provincial laws, such as the requirement for regeneration of harvested Crown lands. Employers for this occupation include public administration, support activities for forestry, and electric power generation transmission and distribution.

Forestry Worker

As job openings and job seekers are projected to be at relatively similar levels over the 2022-2031 period, the balance between labour supply and demand seen in recent years in Canada is expected to continue over the projection period.

Greenhouse Supervisor

Employment growth can be expected due to healthy levels of activities in non-residential and residential construction, and in the housing resale market to provide landscaping services.

Changes to environmental and energy regulations allowing green roofs on certain buildings, and increased greenhouse, nursery and floriculture production in Ontario will also allow for growth. Restructuring in the cannabis industry may affect opportunities for growers in this occupational group. Most employers are in companies that provide landscape and maintenance services to buildings and residences, plus self-employment. 50% of those in this occupation are self-employed, compared to an average of 12% for all occupations.

Landscape and Horticulture Technician

In Canada, labour demand and labour supply are expected to be broadly in line for this occupation group over the 2022-2031 period.

In Ontario, the employment outlook will be good with employment growth leading to several new positions and several positions coming from retirements. The main trends to allow for employment will be healthy levels of activities in non-residential and residential construction to support landscaping services and public sector investments in agricultural and horticultural societies. The majority in this group are employed by companies that provide landscaping and maintenance services to buildings and residences.

Natural Resources Analyst

Although this occupational group has had a balanced market in recent years, projected job openings are expected to be substantially higher than job seekers, creating a shortage of workers over the 2022-2031 period in Canada. 15,700 new openings are expected, with only 8,000 new job seekers expected to be available to fill them.
